This course is a theoretical guide to enteral feeding, tailored for primary care nurses, those working in residential aged care facilities (RACFs), and nurses looking to refresh their knowledge and skills.
It provides a strong theoretical foundation in the anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. You'll gain a better understanding of the various types of enteral tubes based on their insertion site, enteral insertion site assessment and how to manage common complications.
The course has a strong practical focus, covering the administration of different feeding regimens, such as bolus, intermittent, and continuous feeding, safe administration of medications, changing feeding lines and how to unblock an enteral device. While emphasising the importance of maintaining tube patency and correct positioning, as well as preventing infection.
This course will empower you in troubleshooting enteral-related complications and provide education to patients and their carers to promote safe and confident home-based care.
Whether you're new to enteral feeding or seeking to enhance your clinical competencies, this course will empower you with the skills, confidence, and knowledge to deliver person-centered, in how to trouble shoot.
Learning Outcomes:
Apply anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) relevant to enteral feeding
Identify common types of enteral feeding tubes and their indications.
Assess enteral insertion site and provide appropriate stoma care.
Administer enteral feeding (bolus, intermittent and continuous).
Demonstrate best practice for administering oral medications and unblocking enteral device.
Identify and manage common enteral feeding complications
Educate patients and their carers on safe feeding practice and troubleshooting.
