About the event

 

This webinar will be a collaboration between  End-of-Life Essentials  (EOLE) Flinders University and the Australian College of Nursing (ACN). The webinar will be run as a one-hour panel discussion. The webinar aligns with R U OK? Day on September 12th, 2024. The topic will be self-care for health professionals in acute hospitals, with a specific focus on collective self-care, asking ‘Are we okay?’, stepping back from the individual level, and considering the broader healthcare team. As part of the discussion, the EOLE team will outline how EOLE education and resources can help assist health professionals and healthcare teams with their self-care practices and build their confidence in caring for patients at the end of life.

 

Key Learning Objectives

  1. Reflect on current challenges associated with your current role and personal well-being.
  2. Consider workplace strategies that can be used to promote individual self-care and collective well being in your clinical /work setting.
  3. Identify personal self-care activities and resources you can apply/utilise in your daily life

 

About the speakers

 

Associate Professor Jason Mills FACN is Chair, End of Life Care Faculty and an Associate Professor of Palliative and End of Life Care.

Associate Professor Jason Mills is a Registered Nurse and teaching/research academic at the Flinders University College of Nursing and Health Sciences, within its Caring Futures Institute and Research Centre for Palliative Care, Death and Dying. He is passionate about nurse leadership and honoured to Chair the End of Life Care Faculty.

Dr Jonathan Ramachenderan – Pain and Palliative Care Senior Medical Practitioner, WA

Jonathan is a Pain and Palliative Care doctor who loves writing and teaching. He deeply understands the centrality of self-care for health professionals due to his journey of burnout and re-aligning his priorities. He lives in Perth with his wife and three boys and won the Palliative Care Australia Award for Excellence in Generalist Palliative Care in 2021.

Sara Fleming – Nurse Practitioner and Senior Lecturer in Palliative Care, SA

Sara is a Nurse Practitioner with 24 years of clinical experience in Paediatric Palliative Care. She is currently working with Flinders University as Senior Lecturer in Palliative Care, and with Palliative Care Australia on Paediatric Projects. She brings her clinical experience, love of teaching, and passion for the sector to this body of work. Sara has professional interests in sustainable practice, communication, spirituality, and culture, and personally she enjoys family, chocolate and cycling!

Jennifer Smith – Nurse Practitioner in Palliative Care, NSW

Jennifer is a recently qualified Nurse Practitioner in palliative care, working in the community setting on the North Coast of NSW. She has been working in palliative care for nearly ten years, covering both inpatient and community settings. Jennifer has turned around her own career from being a ‘reluctant nurse’ planning to leave nursing, to returning to full-time practice and then stepping into a nurse practitioner training position.
