About the event

This webinar will focus on quality and safety in nursing practice, exploring evidence, standards, and practical application through a nursing lens. Designed for Registered Nurses working across a range of clinical settings in Australia, the session will highlight the importance of quality and safety, the role of evidence-based practice, and the contribution of nurse-led research in improving care. It will also provide an overview of the purpose and key components of the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards and discuss how NSQHS clinical governance principles can be applied in everyday nursing practice.

About the speakers

 

Professor Tracey Bucknall MACN, School of Nursing & Midwifery at Deakin University and Director of Nursing Research & Foundational Chair in Nursing, Alfred Care Group, Bayside Health

Distinguished Professor Tracey Bucknall is the Foundational Professor of Nursing and Director of Nursing Research, Alfred Health, a joint appointment with Deakin University’s School of Nursing and Midwifery. She is also Co-director of Deakin University’s Centre for Quality and Patient Safety Research, within the Institute for Health Transformation. Her research focuses on improving patient safety, health service management, and the integration of research evidence into clinical practice and health policy.

Widely published and internationally respected, Professor Bucknall has been named among the world’s top 2% of researchers. She has held adjunct professorial appointments in Denmark, the UK, and across Australia. In acknowledgement of her international contribution to nursing science, leadership, and policy, she was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing and Sigma International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame. In Australia, she has served on various advisory committees for the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care and the National Health and Medical Research Council.

Brett Cooper - Plascare Business Development Manager

Brett operates a specialist business advisory and supports Plascare in business development and stakeholder engagement for the Sharpsafe range. Within the healthcare industry, Brett focuses on aligning sharps management with the new Australian Standards to reduce sharps-related injuries and enhance workplace safety protocols. His work is centred on ensuring that clinical environments meet the highest levels of safety through compliant, best-practice disposal solutions.

Beyond his professional advisory work, Brett brings a unique, firsthand perspective. As a Type 1 diabetic, his daily personal experience with sharps management informs his deep commitment to container integrity and user safety. He is dedicated to supporting the nursing profession through practical education and best-practice disposal solutions.

Sirini Griffiths MACN - Director of the Clinical Education Unit at Austin Health

Sirini Griffiths is the Director of the Clinical Education Unit at Austin Health, one of Victoria’s quaternary health services. She has a clinical background and postgraduate qualifications in emergency and critical care nursing and holds a Master of Health Administration from La Trobe University. In her role, Sirini leads a large interdisciplinary education portfolio including nursing and allied health education, simulation, digital learning and clinical safety initiatives. She is particularly interested in strengthening the connection between clinical governance, workforce capability and everyday nursing practice to improve patient outcomes and support high-quality, safe care.
