About the event

This webinar will explore the application of intersectionality in mixed methods research within the context of healthcare, with a particular focus on nursing and healthcare disparities. Using the presenter’s own PhD study as a case example, "Using Intersectionality to Explore Age (65+) and Rurality in Hospital In The Home Admission: A Mixed Methods Study," attendees will gain insight into how intersectional frameworks can uncover the complexities of healthcare experiences. The study examines the interplay of age and rurality in the decision-making process for Hospital In The Home (HITH) services, highlighting how a patients social identities impact their access and experiences with healthcare. The session will also introduce the value of mixed methods research in capturing the richness of intersectionality. By combining qualitative and quantitative approaches, the study provides a comprehensive understanding of how intersecting identities affect healthcare outcomes for older adults in rural areas. Participants will learn practical strategies for integrating intersectionality into their own research, exploring both the challenges and opportunities presented by this approach in nursing and healthcare research. The presentation will also emphasize the importance of using mixed methods to amplify unheard voices and inform more inclusive and equitable healthcare policies and practices.

Key Learning Objectives

  • Explore how intersectionality illuminates the ways in which elements of a persons identity can interact to create unique individual and group experiences.
  • Outline the advantages of using an intersectional mixed methods approach, especially in the context of exploring complex, multidimensional phenomena like healthcare.
  • Examine the opportunities that mixed methods research offers for amplifying previous unheard voices and producing more nuanced and comprehensive findings.
