About the event

Join the Rural and Remote Faculty Leadership team for an upcoming webinar with guest speaker Trent Dean, Chief Executive Officer of Gateway Health. Trent will be exploring his PhD research aimed to explore how mental health conditions are identified in people with intellectual disability (ID) living in regional Australia, with particular attention to the relational, structural, and contextual factors shaping this process.

Key Learning Objectives

  • Explain how mental health identification for people with intellectual disability functions as a negotiated and relational process within fragmented regional service systems, including the roles of disability, mental health, and informal care sectors.
  • Identify key structural and relational barriers to effective mental health identification in regional and rural contexts, and analyse how inter-professional relationships, role clarity, and advocacy influence access, continuity, and accountability.
  • Apply the research study’s grounded theory to practice by recognising opportunities to strengthen advocacy, integrate informal knowledge, and build interprofessional collaboration to support earlier and more responsive mental health identification for people with intellectual disability in regional settings.
