In partnership with BEAT Bladder Cancer Australia, ACN is pleased to present you with a free webinar series on Bladder Cancer – The Patient Journey. These interactive webinars will provide both a clinical and patient perspective of the bladder cancer patient journey.
Facilitated by Dr Kalli Spencer (BEAT’s Health Advisory Team Leader) and ACN ACT State Chair Chrysta Bridge MACN, the presentation will hear from oncology Nurse Navigator Helen Anderson, along with a number of survivors along who have followed different treatment pathways. The talk will specifically consider a patient perspective and the role of the nurse through this journey:
- Sharing Stories: Individual patient experiences including Symptoms – Diagnosis – Treatment – Support - Health & Wellbeing - Survivorship
- Focus on key/complex situations and how patients managed this both physically & emotionally,
- Introduce BEAT Bladder Cancer Australia as a resource for nurses to use, and to refer to their patients/families during their care of bladder cancer patients.
The webinar will provide case-scenarios backed up with current evidence-based practice guidelines using the highest levels of evidence where possible.

Presenter Bios:
Dr Kalli Spencer, BEAT’s Health Advisory Team Leader.
Dr Spencer is a urological surgeon with a special interest in oncology. He is a keen academic, completing a master’s degree in Urology, publishing research papers as well as teaching students, interns and medical officers. He is a qualified cancer support group leader. He has a particular interest in health advocacy, raising awareness of cancer in the community through numerous public talks, radio presentations & social media.
Helen Anderson, Oncology Nurse Navigator
Helen Anderson is an Oncology Nurse Navigator specialising in Genitourinary Cancer Care Coordination at the Gold Coast University Hospital. Helen completed her nurse training in 1999 in the UK and has worked within Medical/Surgical Oncology and Research in the UK and Australia in various roles. Over the last 5 years her work has predominantly involved the support, education and care coordination of patients diagnosed with genitourinary cancers. Helen is currently undertaking a PhD focusing on the symptom burden and Quality of Life in patients diagnosed with advanced bladder cancer. She is co-chair of the Genitourinary Cancer Specialist Practice Network Committee through CNSA. Helen is passionate about ensuring patients and their families receive the right support at the right time and in the most convenient place for them. She tries to help support and navigate patients through an often-complex health care system ensuring their needs are met and they feel supported and empowered.
Christine La Rose, Bladder Cancer Survivor & BEAT’s Patient Advisory Team Leader
Christine, 53 is a bladder cancer survivor and brings a cancer patient’s perspective to the BEAT team. She was diagnosed in 2017 with muscle invasive bladder cancer, underwent radical cystectomy surgery and now lives with a neobladder. Christine is passionate about raising awareness of bladder cancer in the community and ensuring patients and carers have access to the information and support they need. She is a qualified cancer support group leader and co-hosts a national bladder cancer support group each month.
Richard Green, Bladder Cancer Survivor
Richard, 64 was diagnosed in 2020 with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (in-situ carcinoma). He underwent intravesical therapy inc. chemotherapy (Gemcitabine and Docetaxel) and BCG immunotherapy. Richard is a very active member of the national bladder cancer support group and wants to keep spreading bladder cancer awareness in the community as well as helping others on their bladder cancer journey.
Peter Haggarty, Bladder Cancer Survivor
Peter, 69 was diagnosed in 2017 with muscle invasive bladder cancer. His treatment involved radical cystectomy surgery and now lives with a urostomy (stoma). He has since had further surgery to remove his kidney. Peter is a very active member of the national bladder cancer support group and wants to keep spreading bladder cancer awareness in the community as well as helping others on their bladder cancer journey.
