What are the Roles of Nurses in Disasters?
Presented by the Disaster Health COI, the webinar will hear from world renowned emergency health researcher Dr Jamie Ranse FACN, and Emerging Nurse Leader Louise Lommerse MACN. Topics covered include the realities of being a nurse in a disaster, and the different training options available.

Presented by the Disaster Health COI, the webinar will hear from world renowned emergency health researcher Dr Jamie Ranse FACN and Emerging Nurse Leader Louise Lommerse MACN, who will each give a presentation covering different perspectives of disaster nursing.


Drawing upon her own personal experience working with a disaster organisation, Louise Lommerse's presentation will cover: 

  • How to get started as a volunteer in disaster situations
  • The different training options available – ie TAFE to University

Since completing her Bachelor of Nursing, Louise has completed a Graduate Certificate in Disaster Healthcare, has become an EmergoTrain instructor and is currently undertaking a Graduate Certificate in Health Leadership. Louise has a strong interest in rural and remote health, disaster healthcare and hospital based emergency management. She volunteers with Disaster Response Australia and is the president of her Local Ambulance Committee.

Dr Jamie Ranse's presentation will:
  • Outline the realities of being a nurse in a disaster
  • Discuss the education-practice mismatch in disaster nursing
  • Discuss challenges in disaster nursing
Jamie is recognised internationally for his work focusing on emergency health care. He has over 70 peer-reviewed publications in the area of disaster and mass gathering health, this work supported with over AUD$1.5M in research funding. In 2019 Jamie founded the Mass Gathering Collaboration at Griffith University, which aims to strengthen health security and health system resilience globally for mass gatherings in partnership with communities, government, non-government, industry, and academic organisations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Jamie has provided consultancy to the World Health Organization, and the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) as the lead developer of the Industry Framework for COVID Safe Events in Queensland, which provides guidance and practical strategies for event organisers to operate in a COVID-19 context.
