Older people with diabetes: who are they and what do they need?







About the course

This interactive course was designed to highlight the increasing prevalence of diabetes in older people, the imperative to proactively plan care and to personalise care with the older person based on their health status, risk assessments and life expectancy. It will describe how care of older people with diabetes fits with the National Safety and Quality Standards 2017.

It will be conducted over 4 hours and is equivalent to 4 continuing professional development (CPD) hours*.

 

Who should attend?

This course is primarily aimed at nurses but it is also suitable for other disciplines such as doctors and allied health professionals.

 

Key learning outcomes

On completion, participants will be better able to:

Understand the pathophysiological changes associated with diabetes and ageing and their impact on health and functional status and care needs.

Understand the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes in older people.

Describe the key health trajectories and why they are important to proactive care planning.

Describe the importance of proactive planning for palliative and end of life care and the importance of encouraging individuals to document their values and care preferences while they have decisional capacity.

 

Professor Trisha Dunning AM Biography

Chair in Nursing Centre for Quality and Patient Safety Research Barwon health Partnership, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Deakin University, Geelong.

Professor Dunning AM is Credentialed Diabetes Nurse Educator. Her research focuses on diabetes and older people and palliative and end of life care for older people. She is widely published in peer-reviewed papers and books. The McKellar Guidelines for Managing Diabetes in Older People continue to inform national and international policy. She served two terms on the Board of the International Diabetes Federation and is a current Member of the Board Of Diabetes Victoria.
