The New International Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Injuries

Pressure injuries are a common health problem that occur across all clinical settings. Pressure injuries represent a major health burden for individuals and health providers. They impact on reduced quality of life for individuals and their prevention and treatment result in substantial implicit and explicit costs to individuals and health care providers.

The European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP), the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP), and the Pan Pacific Pressure Injury Alliance (PPPIA) have collaborated with 14 other international wound organisations to produce the Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Ulcers/Injuries: Clinical Practice Guideline, The International Guideline. Now in its third edition, this is a much expanded global international edition of the guideline. The International Guideline presents evidence-based recommendations and good practice statements to assist health professionals and consumers to deliver best practice in pressure injury care. The guideline aims to promote the best possible care for individuals, promote health professional knowledge, reduce care variance and guide cost-effective healthcare choices.

The webinar will present The International Guideline, which will be launched in mid-November, 2019. The webinar will include discussion of the guideline methodology and presentation and outline how to use the guideline in clinical practice. The presentation will review the recommendations and good practice statements in the guideline, discuss the Strengths of Evidence and Strengths of Recommendation, and highlight the implementation considerations that are included in the guideline to assist health professionals in making care decisions with their patients. The webinar will discuss the input that was received from patient individuals and informal caregivers in the guideline development. Content on preventing pressure injuries, treating pressure injuries and implementing pressure injury interventions will be discussed, with a focus on new recommendations that arise from the most recent published evidence.

PROFESSOR KERYLN CARVILLE RN, STN (CRED), PhD Professor Primary Health Care & Community Nursing Silver Chain Group and Curtin University, Western Australia. Keryln has extensive clinical experience and is committed to research and education within the domains of wound and ostomy care. She was appointed an Inaugural Fellow of the Australian Wound Management Association in 2006.

She is Chair of the Australian Pressure Injury Advisory Panel and Chair Pan Pacific Pressure Injury Alliance, Chair of the AWMA Australian Wound Standards Committee and Chair Evidence Committee International Wound Infection Institute. She sits on the Editorial Boards of Wound Practice & Research and the Journal of Stomal Therapy Australia. Keryln was awarded the WA Health Life Time Achievement Award for Nursing in 2010.

DR EMILY HAESLER, PhD, Adjunct Associate Professor, Curtin University School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedicine. Emily is the methodologist for the 2014 and 2019 International Pressure Injury Guideline. Emily’s primary research interests are in research methodology, particularly in evidence-based clinical guidelines. Emily is an Associate Professor with Wound Management and Healing (WHAM) Node at Curtin University, where she works on wound research, software development and wound-related educational material, including resources for in low- and middle-income countries. She has active research projects in wound care, translational research, dementia care, medical education and consumer engagement, and manages accreditation of prevocational medical education in her region of Australia.

PAM MITCHELL (Diploma of Nursing; PG Dip Wound Healing & Tissue Repair; Masters of Nursing), Clinical Nurse Consultant Wound Management, Canterbury District Health Board.

Pam currently holds the post of the Clinical Nurse Consultant for Wound Management at Christchurch Hospital a role held for the past 11 years. Her work history includes a long association with the Plastic Surgery Units at Burwood, Middlemore, and Christchurch Hospitals in New Zealand and Plastic and Craniofacial Unit in Oxford (England). Other areas of clinical practice included Cardiothoracic & Vascular, neurology & dermatology nursing and volunteer work in Mexico, Dominican Republic and Madagascar.

She has been a NZWCS member on the Steering committee of the Pan Pacific Guidelines and the Guideline Development Group for the 2014 International Guidelines. Her current role involves prevention, assessment and management of a wide spectrum of wounds including trauma, surgery, pressure ulcers to palliative wound care and education. Pam is passionate about improving quality of life and outcomes for patients with wounds and particularly Pressure Injuries.
