WA Region CPD Event: Nurses' Health: Fit for the Future

WA Region CPD Event: Nurses' Health: Fit for the Future
The WA Region leadership group invites you to:

Nurses' Health: Fit for the Future?

This event is presented by ACN President & Professor of Nursing and Health Services Management at Edith Cowan University & UTS: Professor Christine Duffield. Professor Duffield discusses that nurses provide the majority of health care and need good health to deliver quality care. However, nurses face the same issues of ageing and increasing prevalence if chronic disease as the general population. An understanding of the prevalence of chronic disease and contributing risk factors currently employed is essential for workforce planning and development of interventions. Results will be presented from a study examining nurses' health using a web-based survey distributed electronically through the  New South Wales Nurses and Midwives Association, all local health district email lists and specialty nurse and midwives associations.

Following Professor Duffield's presentation we will also have My Ly provide an introduction to Health at Every Size principles and how a non-diet approach to health can be adopted.

During this CPD presentation you will:

Develop an understanding of how chronic disease and other risk factors might impact the nursing workforce
Develop an understanding of the need for self-care
Gain an understanding of ways to prolong and sustain a healthy career in nursing

Mrs My Ly

My Ly is a lecturer in the Maters of Nutrition and Dietetics and co-ordinator of the Nutrition Clinic within the Joondalup Community Clinical School, School of Medical and Health Sciences at Edith Cowan University.

My brings with her a wealth of experience and expertise in dietetics, education and training, specializing in the area of chronic disease management (diabetes and heart disease), HAES and behaviour change.  She is passionate about providing patient cantered care, and is an advocate and practitioner of effective behaviour change coaching and counselling.

HAES is a theory with the main tenet involving rejection of the scientific consensus regarding the link between excessive calorie intake, a sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical exercise, improper nutrition, and greater body weight - and its effects on a person's health.

HAES advocates argue that traditional interventions focused on weight loss, such as dieting, do not reliably produce positive health outcomes.  HAES includes a significant social and psychological dimension. Proponents view the common wisdom that obesity is unhealthy as part of a general stigmatisation of the obese.
