Introduction to Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drugs

Do you want to know more about current drug trends?  Would you like to know how to best support people impacted by substance use?
This interactive workshop is designed for all health professionals working in any clinical settings, who come in contact with people who may be impacted by alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. It provides an overview of the effects of substances, psychosocial impacts, screening, brief interventions, treatment options and referral pathways. The workshop has been designed for Registered and Enrolled Nurses not working for specialty Drug and Alcohol Services.


Presenters:

Amy Faden

Amy is a registered nurse with over 20 years experience in the alcohol and other drugs sector, working in the ACT and NSW. Having started her career in opiate pharmacotherapy, Amy has worked across many areas of AOD and established the inaugural drug court in the ACT. Most recently, Amy has focused on comorbid mental health and AOD, this being a significant issue in her role during the ACT COVID response. Amy was awarded ACT Nurse of the Year in 2010. Amy is a Credentialed Drug and Alcohol Nurse.

 

Jennifer Harland

Jen is a Senior Nurse Advisor at the Australian College of Nursing and has extensive experience in the Drug and Alcohol sector, spanning over 20 years. She has held diverse roles in clinical, academic, policy, and leadership positions. Previously, Jen was the Global Coordinator of the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST), delivering training and support internationally. She spearheaded the creation of ASSIST training resources for various contexts, including mental health and emergency departments. Jennifer holds multiple degrees, including an MSc (Addiction) and an MA (Applied Ethics), along with several Post Graduate Certificates. Jen is a Credentialed Drug and Alcohol Nurse.

 

Linda Wiggington

Linda has worked in a variety of AOD clinical settings including Withdrawal Management, Opioid Treatment Programs, Consultation-Liaison, Justice Health Services and a clinical support telephone service. She has also worked as a strategic co-ordinator, clinical leader and manager. Linda is currently employed as a Clinical Nurse Consultant in Southern NSW. Linda has a Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Nursing and a Graduate Diploma in Corrections Health and Forensic Nursing. Linda is a credentialed Drug and Alcohol Nurse.
