Immunisation Annual CPD Updates 5

Providing immunisations within the emergency department is an important component of maintaining individual immunity within the community. Opportunistic vaccination is important and should be undertaken at every opportunity.

Knowing when to administer Tetanus in the emergency setting can perhaps be complex at times especially if you are unable to find the appropriate immunisation documentation or if the patient is unable to give an accurate immunisation history.

This CPD module offers information on how to overcome these hurdles in the emergency setting. For some, this may be a refresher in relation to what tetanus is and the importance of looking out for signs and symptoms of this vaccine preventable disease.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this CPD update, you should be able to:
- Have a good understanding of what tetanus is and how the infection is attained
- Determine the need for booster doses.
- Apply the information gained from within the Australian Immunisation Handbook (AIH) to guide immunisation practice.
