Falls and malnutrition have significant consequences on the elderly yet continue to be leading causes of morbidity in the aging population. Falls are the number one cause of accidental injury in older Australians, with 1 in 4 people who are aged 65 and over having at least 1 fall per year. The Dietitians Association of Australia calls malnutrition the silent epidemic in the elderly, with more than 50% of older Australians either at risk of malnutrition or are malnourished. The module reviews the causes and consequences of falls and malnutrition in the elderly and the nurse’s role in promoting effective management strategies.
