Distance, Disadvantage and Determination: Rural Health Challenges and the Future of Nursing Rural and Remote Generalism

This session presents a comprehensive discussion with the Deputy Rural Health Commissioner (Professor Linda Deravin), examining the policy, workforce, and practice dimensions that shape rural and remote healthcare in Australia. The event will explore the functions and strategic role of the National Rural Health Commissioner and Deputies in addressing health inequities across geographically diverse populations. Key concepts underpinning rural health classification - including definitions of ‘rural’ and the application of the Modified Monash Model - will be discussed to contextualise service delivery and workforce distribution. The discussion will further consider the impact of living in rural and remote regions, with particular attention to the disproportionate burden of disease and the structural drivers of urban - rural health disparities. Drawing on national data, including insights from the National Rural and Remote Nursing and Midwifery Education Survey, the session will analyse current challenges and opportunities within the rural health workforce.
