About the event

Join us for Evolution of a primary care nurse-led service over time – 110 years of advocacy to influence and improve client outcomes in the community, a webinar presented with the CEO of Brown Nurses, Dr Elisabeth Black FACN, exploring the enduring legacy and continued evolution of a unique nurse-led community health service.

Since 1913, Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor and the Brown Nurses, have provided a not-for-profit, inner-city community nursing service dedicated to supporting vulnerable people at risk of homelessness. Working in partnership with clients, nurses deliver holistic, coordinated care focused on restoring dignity, self-worth, and improving access to essential health and social supports.

This presentation reflects on more than a century of nursing leadership, beginning with the visionary founders of the service and their deep understanding of the social determinants of health, advocacy, and the importance of an independent nursing voice. Their legacy has enabled the service to grow into a contemporary, professional organisation that continues to support nurses to work to their full scope of practice and deliver evidence-informed, high-quality care.

Today, the service is sustained by a strong culture of learning, collaboration, and advocacy. It empowers nurses to influence health systems, improve access to care, and respond to the complex and evolving needs of marginalised communities, continuing a legacy of nursing leadership that remains vital in the 21st century and beyond.
